SON COURSE WITH JUAN CARLOS PACHEGO, FROM SUNDAY 17TH AUGUST 2008 @ THE ODDFELLOWS CLUB, LEICESTER

This course is for dancers who want to enrich their dancing with Son, the predecessor of Salsa. We are running two eight-week courses in parallel: the first hour will be for those who are new to Son and will cover the basics; the second hour is for those who are familiar with the basics of Son. This is a structured course, with each workshops building on what you learnt the previous week, with Juan Carlos, one of Cuba's great masters of traditional Cuban dance forms.

WHAT IS SON AND HOW WILL IT ENRICH YOUR SALSA?

Son is derived from Cuba's African and Spanish roots, and is the predecessor of Salsa. It is a sensual and elegant dance, with a similar dance-hold and footwork as Salsa. It is danced, off the beat, and relies less on complicated turn patterns than Salsa and more on quick flirtatious and sensual side-to-side movements of the shoulders, torso and hips accenting the underlying rhythm of the feet. Son music is rich and traditional and associated with the best of Cuba.

A common saying in Cuba is, 'if you can't dance Son you can't dance Salsa', as most Cubans use Son dance technique (e.g. the dancing off beat and the body movement) to enrich their Salsa dancing. This course will take your dancing, musical interpretation and enjoyment of Cuban music to a new level and make you stand out from the crowd, as few dancers in the UK have the skills to incorporate Son into their Salsa!

THE DATES & TIMES:

Each Sunday, from 17th August for eight weeks.:
1 to 2pm: Level 1 (for those new to Son)
2.15 to 3.15pm: Level 2 (for those who are familiar with the Son basics)

PLEASE NOTE: Sunday 31 Aug (only) class times will be:
10am to 11am: Level 1
11.15am to 12.15am: Level 2

One Son course is £50 in advance, £55 (on the day). If you'd like to attend both lessons, the price is £80 in advance, £85 (on the day).

ABOUT JUAN CARLOS PACHEGO:

Juan Carlos was born in Cuba where he studied, for nineteen years, all forms of Cuban traditional Dance, with the venerable masters. He started his dance studies at the National School of Ballet in Havana, from the age of seven to eleven. He then went on to study at the National School of Art. He has danced with some of the most prestigious Latin orchestras in the world including: Buenavista Social Club, Los Van Van, Anjel Bonne, Muñequitos de Matanzas (Rumba/Columbia/Guaguanco), and many others. He has also appeared on many Cuban TV Programs, including: 'Para Bailar', a prestigious Cuban music festival, the “Palmas y Cañas” and many more. Juan Carlos is one of the greatest masters of traditional Cuban dance forms such as Cha Cha, Son and Mambo.
